I was wrong about Rafa’s body holding up for a chance at the title. I was also wrong about the young guns finally making noise and going deep in a Slam as a group. Unfortunately, I was VERY right about the mess that was Errani’s quarter of the draw.

But was I shocked by any of it?  You’ll find out soon enough in this “catch up” version of shock or not from week one of the US Open. There are a lot of ’em, so get ready!

(In chronological order for easier reference)

James Blake retires: Shock or Not? Not!

With his results this past year, it was only a matter of time. I’ll forego discussions on Venus Williams, Mardy Fish, and Robby Ginepri for now.

Giorgi

Fernando Verdasco loses to Ivan Dodig in 5: Shock or Not? Shock

Fernando was finally getting his head together and playing decent tennis. After this showing, all bets are off and I expect him to go back to where he went after losing that Aussie semi to Rafa.

Kei Nishikori loses Daniel Evans: Shock or Not? Shock

Kei is too good to go off the rails as badly as he did for Montreal, Cincinnati, and the US Open.

Ernests Gulbis, Grigor Dimitrov, Benoit Paire, and Jerzy Janowicz all lose in R1: Shock or Not? Big fat disappointing shock!

Jerzy hurt his back in practice before the start of the Open. As for the rest of them, the reasons are sundry and various for not living up to the hype. Maybe next year a couple of them will keep their mouths shut and let the racquets do the talking for them.

shocknotSam

Stosur

Sam Stosur loses to Vicky Duval: Shock or Not? Shock with a SMH!!!

Sam is such a likeable person, but her results are infuriatingly inconsistent. I’d hate to think of her as a Top 10 one hit wonder, but I don’t know what else to say about such a horrible lack of championship mettle from a Grand Slam champion.

Venus Williams loses to Zheng Jie: Shock or Not? Not

I was actually shocked that she beat Kirsten Flipkens so handily: not so much for this tough loss. But then again, all of her losses are tough these days.

Fabio Fognini wins 5 games in loss to Rajeev Ram: Shock or Not? Disgusted Shock

Many consider him to be the ultimate entertainer.  I’m leaning more towards bratty and tedious.

Sara Errani loses to Flavia Pennetta: Shock or Not? Shock

I’m shocked that she lost so easily to Flavia, and even more shocked that she crumbled so horribly under the weight of being seeded fourth.

shocknotLleyton

Hewitt

Sloane Stephens easily defeats Jamie Hampton: Shock or Not? Shock

I previously viewed them as peers…not anymore after this match.

Kevin Anderson loses to Marcos Baghdatis: Shock or Not? Shock

Kevin has played well this year, and Marcos not so much.

Del Potro loses to Lleyton Hewitt: Shock or Not? Shock

This was the disappointing exclamation point on a Slam season that DelPo will probably want to forget.

shocknotPhil

Kohlschreiber

Isner loses to Kohlschreiber: Shock or Not? Shock AND not!

After his brutal win over Monfils, I’m not totally shocked that he lost. But I still expected a better showing from Isner 2.0 after he put the competitive pieces together this summer.

Caroline Wozniacki loses to Camila Giorgi: Shock or Not? Shock…No, really!

Camila’s a decent player, but these are the types of losses that validate all the reasons she was discounted as a WTA No. 1.

Petra Kvitova loses to Alison Riske 3 and 0: Shock or Not? Shock

There are reports that Petra is going to get checked for her recurrent health issues.  It may help her, and I hope it does. But it seems to me more like it’s an issue of overplaying before the Open.

shocknotTim

Smyczek

Tim Smyczek was the last American man in Singles: Shock or Not? Shock

Definitely wasn’t my pre-tourney pick for this section of the draw, but glad he had a good run.

Week Two R16 action starts on Labor Day. Enjoy!

    Yay shock or not!!!

James Blake retires: Shock or Not? Not! NOT

A nice way to wrap it all up.

Fernando Verdasco loses to Ivan Dodig in 5: Shock or Not? Shock SHOCK

He was finally getting some traction after a lackluster year, and he had a decent draw. Missed opportunity.

Kei Nishikori loses Daniel Evans: Shock or Not? Shock SHOCK

I saw this one. It was like he wasn’t even there.

Ernests Gulbis, Grigor Dimitrov, Benoit Paire, and Jerzy Janowicz all lose in R1: Shock or Not? Big fat disappointing shock! DITTO

Super disappointing US Open for the up-and-comer new kids. I’ll give Jerzy’s back a pass, and maybe Benoit’s too, but the rest were just flat out disappointments – including Nishikori in this.

Sam Stosur loses to Vicky Duval: Shock or Not? Shock with a SMH!!! WTF!

She won this title, and goes out to a 1st round qualifier. Who does she think she is – Kuznetsova? (well they are playing doubles together)

Venus Williams loses to Zheng Jie: Shock or Not? Not NOT

    3 words – Hang.It.Up.

Fabio Fognini wins 5 games in loss to Rajeev Ram: Shock or Not? Disgusted Shock DITTO

Maybe he watched too many French players.

Sara Errani loses to Flavia Pennetta: Shock or Not? Shock NOT

There’s history between these two that we won’t ever really know.

Sloane Stephens easily defeats Jamie Hampton: Shock or Not? Shock MEH

Yeah we wanted more, but even Jamie admitted she’s just not up for it on the big stages yet.

Kevin Anderson loses to Marcos Baghdatis: Shock or Not? Shock SHOCK

Del Potro loses to Lleyton Hewitt: Shock or Not? Shock SHOCK (until I found out his wrist is injured, and then SHOCK)

Ditto. He was the elephant Delpo. Big, moving slowly around the court, no bursts of energy. I’ll give him a mild pass because of his supposed left wrist injury keeping him from swinging freely, but still…

Isner loses to Kohlschreiber: Shock or Not? Shock AND not! SHOCK

He was on a great roll, and looking really fit. Still he ran into the same scenario that took him out last year. Only he’s so much better this year. I figured he’d run into Rafa and give Rafa trouble. Oh well.

Caroline Wozniacki loses to Camila Giorgi: Shock or Not? Shock…No, really! NOT

The Woz is a mess. The end.

Petra Kvitova loses to Alison Riske 3 and 0: Shock or Not? Shock NOT

She went to the hospital the day before the match. Something’s really wrong. Sending happy thoughts your way Petra!

Tim Smyczek was the last American man in Singles: Shock or Not? Shock OMG

Yay for him, but really? Isner, really?

    OK,

The top seeds in the Woz/Errani quarter are already out. NOT

Radwanska out before the 2nd week. YIKES REALLY?

Ferrer, Wawrinka, Tipsarevic, and Gasquet are still here. SHOCK

Very uninspired play from these four this summer. Shows that they are champion enough to rise to big occasions.

Djokovic suddenly has a bye to the semis when his quarter was originally tough. SHOCK (referencing all your comments)

Li Na crushing JJ into 50 million pieces. SHOCK (the crushing part)

Can’t wait for the next one!
